Why is McDonald's NEXT Hong Kong called the fanciest McDonald's in the world?
That’s because everything is different at McDonald's NEXT. The red and yellow interior is replaced with minimalist style metallic design.
The clowns and playful decorations are replaced with futuristic gadgets.
And most importantly – there’s a new healthy, gourmet-style fast-food menu. And that means not only fancy ingredients but also a fully satisfying vegetarian menu. Meat lovers are not the only ones having fun at McDonald's anymore!

McDonald's NEXT Hong Kong menu
The totally upgraded food experience is the main reason why we wanted to try this place out. Our biggest excitement was about the fact that you’re able to fully customize your own burger and salad.
Just scroll through the menu kiosk and pick all the ingredients you like.
The burger selection comes with a choice of bun or bun-less, meat or Portobello mushroom and such ingredients as Parmesan cheese, guacamole, caramelized onions, and even truffle sauce.
The same goes for the salad – pick anything from meats, quinoa, couscous, fresh veggies, different dressings and basically have it as big and good as you like.
Plus they have an open kitchen concept, so you can see all the ingredients right there the huge salad bar.
But no worries – the classic menu is still there too. If you want a Big Mac, you’ll get it!
Everything is cooked right there on the spot and brought to your table just like it should be in a restaurant.
My burger was rich and juicy. It smelled great and totally reminded of a home-made burger made on a grill and loaded with all my favorite ingredients.
The same goes for the salad.
They were fresh, crunchy and just as I like it, without any ingredient that I don’t prefer to eat.
The ability to build your own order is so awesome that way!
Desserts & Coffee
WOW! This was another totally unexpected surprise.
From waffles with whipped cream to different cakes, chocolate ice cream cones.
The selection is so good!
I didn’t have any space left for a dessert after a large burger and salad, so I didn’t taste any, but if it’s even half as good as it looks, I think I’d be super happy with my dessert.
Pro Tip: it's better to come during the day, as the salad bar is full then so as the cake stand. We went there after 9 PM and the shelves were pretty empty. They didn't miss any ingredients we wanted, but there could have possibly been a shortage in the desserts section.
But honestly?
The drink selection really seemed the most impressive part of the menu.
I love trying weird things, so as soon as I saw the „Cheese drinks” selection on the menu, I headed right in.
Berry tea with cheese? Coco with cheese?
Sounds weirdly good to me!
I went with a cheese long black (it’s the same as Americano). What an experience!
The drink didn’t look too good – chunks of cream cheese that make foam and float in the coffee…
But the taste was so good!
A bit of saltiness mixed together with a great strong Arabica taste – if I’d be in Hong Kong for longer, this might become my new go-to coffee order.
Is McDonald’s NEXT worth the hype?
Did it live up to the high expectations that the internet is putting on McDonald's NEXT?
Well, yes and no!
It didn’t really feel „the fanciest”.
It was pretty loud, reminding of a classic fast-food restaurant scene.
The table service was there but didn't feel fancy enough. They served the burger on a wooden tray with a metallic knife and fork, which was cool.
But the salad was served in a paper box with a plastic knife and fork. It killed the whole fancy vibe a bit.
The choice on the menu itself, however, was really „fancy”.
I loved the fact that there are so many fresh ingredients, beef, chicken and Portobello mushroom option.
Food-wise this really gets me excited about the future of McDonald's – fresh and healthy.
So I’d say that its name „McDonald's NEXT” feels really correct.
How much is a McDonald’s in Hong Kong?
I paid 120 HKD (15 USD) for a burger, salad, and a cheese coffee at McDonald’s NEXT.
I feel like it’s a pretty good deal for a custom made burger and salad.
A Big Mac meal at a regular McDonald’s in Hong Kong would cost around 50 HKD (6 USD).
Location and getting there
McDonald's NEXT can actually be found at two locations that I know of.
The original one is centrally located on the Hong Kong island right next to the Admiralty subway station.
The easiest way to get there is to take a metro or any of the above the ground public buses going to the Admiralty station.
The second McDonald's NEXT is in Hong Kong Airport Terminal 1 in the public departures area.
Eating at McDonald’s NEXT is definitely an experience to have when visiting Hong Kong.
It’s something unusual, quite unique and unforgettable, just like Hong Kong itself.
